ALLIANCE — Reduce, reuse and recycle was this year’s theme for the Keep Alliance Beautiful Fair held Saturday the Alliance Central School Gym.

The event included entertainment; games, crafts and a cake walk open free to the public.

Keep Alliance Beautiful Recycling Programs Director Pasha Gonzalez asked that participants bring a grocery bag full of recyclables for a day full of fun.

It was not required but it gave them an additional chance for door prizes, she added.

Nov. 15 is American Recycle Day, and although every year KAB tries to do something on that particular day to raise awareness this is the first year for the fair.

“In years past it fell on a week day limiting our chance to involve the whole community but this year with it falling on a Saturday we wanted to really get the community hyped up about recycling especially with our new recycling center moving forward,” Gonzalez said.

The event involved 16 booths providing arts and crafts focusing on reduction, reusable materials and recycling with prizes for everyone to take away that participated in the fair.

In addition to the numerous games, arts and crafts participants were able to take in a variety of entertainment. Off The Rack Consignment Shoppe owner Kathy Martinson presented a Look for Less Fashion Show taking high-end fashions found in fashion magazines and demonstrated how consumers could piece together the very same outfit for less.

Following the fashion show Jenell Martinez and several St. Agnes second grade students performed a skit titled “Happy Birthday Earth Day” about a dragon and ideas how to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Although nearly 30 volunteers assisted the KAB staff with the organization and booths they had an additional 75 volunteers lending a hand in some way to make the event a success. Among the numerous volunteers was the RSVP group, which not only baked and contributed 25 cakes and plates of cupcakes for the cakewalk but also assisted wherever they were needed.

Gonzalez said all of their volunteers donated a lot of their personal time to assist with the event as well as their many sponsors including Burlington Northern Sante Fe, Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, Wells Fargo and Coke Cola Bottling Co.

The event was not only to educate the public about reducing consumption, reusing materials whenever possible and to recycle materials that can be recycled but Gonzalez said it also gave residents an opportunity to sign up for the rubber tire mulch at 50 percent off the retail costs.
