TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Four players scored in double figures to help the Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team to a 69-60 win over Central Wyoming College on Saturday afternoon during the final day of the Eastern Wyoming College Basketball Tournament.
Freshman Stormye Everett paced the Cougars in scoring for the second straight day as she poured in 18 points. Joining Everett in the double-figure scoring column for the Cougars were Shaquilah Davis with 14 points, SeLina Ysac with 11 points and Tawny Drexler with 10 points.
The victory pushed WNCC’s record to 6-2 on the season.
“The kids showed some major improvement this week,” WNCC assistant coach Jennifer Pedersen said. “Friday against the all-star team, it wasn’t the best competition we’ll see all year, but it was a good confidence booster. Today the kids did a better job of adjusting to who they were playing with because we have some players that are used to playing wing positions, and now they are being put on the low block and having to step into roles they are not used to playing.”
Ysac, who’s been battling an injured ankle, finished the game with a double-double. In addition to her 11 points, Ysac pulled down a team-high 10 boards. Drexler added six rebounds.
Defensively, Everett collected a team-high five steals.
“Stormye has been putting up some pretty tremendous numbers, yet she has been in foul trouble in every game we have played in,” Pedersen said. “She just needs to be more consistent on both ends of the court.”
The Cougars limited Central Wyoming to just 28 first-half points in building a 36-28 halftime advantage.
Davis dished out three assists for WNCC, while Caley Fisher scored seven points and Amber Kistler added six.
WNCC finished the contest shooting 34 percent from the field.
Central Wyoming was led in scoring by Nicole Merrill, who scored 12 points. Dani White and Michaeleen Brown both added 11 points.
WNCC will be back in action at home on Friday and Saturday in the Thanksgiving Classic.
