Working together to keep community members aware of their health, Scottsbluff’s YMCA and several area health organizations, including Regional West Medical Center, hosted a health fair on Wednesday.
“It’s great for the community and another way to promote a healthy lifestyle,” said Aaron Fabel, program and aquatic director at YMCA. “Collaborating with RWMC and others makes it easier for people to get many tests done in one place.”
Several stations were set up for participants to have tests done.
“We’ve had a really good morning,” said Cindy Montanez, a phlebotomist with RWMC, who was doing cholesterol and glucose checks. “The turnout has been pretty steady.”
Some of the participants attended because it offered a lot of information.
“It sounded like a good deal,” Angie Rhamy said. “Lots of good information in one area that I can get easily.”
Rhamy visited Wills Chiropractic Clinic, which had a booth with information and a foot scan test.
“We’re here helping to raise awareness of foot health,” said Dr. Nick Krysl of Wills Chiropractic Clinic. “The feet are the foundation of the spinal column, and a lot of people don’t realize how they affect their overall health.”
Many ailments can be caused by an imbalance in the feet, he said.
“People can experience everything from lower back and neck pain to headaches from imbalances,” he said. “It starts with the feet and travels up through the body.”
The company brought information on feet, a display of foot beds and how they can be made specifically for a patient.
“Anything that can be caused by a foot imbalance, we can fix,” Krysl said. “And what we can’t fix, we help the patient find someone who can.”
A LincCare booth had information on sleeping disorders.
“We’ve been busy informing people about sleep apnea, low oxygen and talking about some of the durable medical equipment we have available,” said Katie Palomo, a customer service representative at LincCare.
Loud snoring can be a cause of sleep apnea, but there are other causes that people may not be aware of, according to Palomo.
“Sleep apnea can cause snoring, fatigue, falling asleep while doing tasks such as driving and can cause health risks if untreated, including heart attacks,” she said.
The company offer free overnight testing for participants to take home.
“Our oximetry screening is a simple test people can take home and bring back to us,” she said. “From there, we can determine whether a person would need to come in for a formal test.”
Other tests available included those for bone density, hearing and blood sugar.
“We always have a lot of positive feedback when we do these events,” Fabel said. “It’s convenient for members and nonmembers to come in and take advantage of the event and get a lot of useful information.”
