BAYARD — A new shop has opened in Bayard and is helping local brides dress up for their special day.

Located at 317 Main St., Bayard Bridal, Prom and More opened its doors earlier this month and owner Jan Goossen said the store is off to a good start.

“It’s been fun,” she said. “Not bad at all. The ladies around town have been helpful in letting people know we’re here.”

When she retired from her career in real estate and her husband, Ray, from his position at Mutual of Omaha, the couple moved to Bayard from Omaha to operate the Corner Café. They also went on to run the Ice Cream Wagon for a number of years.

Owning her own bridal shop has been Goossen’s dream for some time, but she said the other businesses kept her so busy, she did not have time.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years,” she said. “We just couldn’t because we had the other business.”

The opportunity came along suddenly, she said and the new shop came together in five weeks. Her husband transitioned into serving as the shop’s bookkeeper and treasurer and two employees started helping part-time. Needless to say, it’s been a busy time, Goossen said.

“It’s a lot, especially considering we’re supposed to be retired,” she said.

A number of name brand gowns are all ready in stock and Goossen said tuxedo services are on the way. With wedding gowns from designers like Da Vinci, Allure, G. Gowns and Forever Yours and prom dresses from Carishma Creative, Love, Fame and Flirt, Goossen said she has a good selection for only having opened a few weeks ago.

Also, a number of accessories for complementing the gowns, including veils, guest books, jewelry and shoes, fill the shelves.

A grand opening is set for Saturday, March 9, to showcase Goossen’s store and products. As part of the celebration, she said there would be special drawings for a prom dress, bridal veil, wedding book, garter and tiara.

Store hours are from 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, noon to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The shop is closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Additional hours are available by appointment.
