Blue Hill mourns four killed in school bus crash
The scene of a fatal crash between a school bus and a tractor trailer is investigated Wednesday night at the intersection of County Road R and 1800 Road in Webster County south of Blue Hill. Travis Witte, 21, of Blue Hill was the driver of the semi, and Marla Wentworth, 59, of Red Cloud was the driver of the school bus. Both were killed in the collision that happen around 5 p.m. Two students on the bus, Dustin Tesdahl, 18, and Caroline Thallman, 10, both of Blue Hill, were killed in the crash. All four died at the scene. Five other students on the bus, ranging in age from 6 to 10 years old, were taken to area hospitals. (Independent/Matt Dixon)

BLUE HILL, Neb. -- When she first saw the smoke late Wednesday afternoon, school bus driver Renee Fielder thought a combine must have caught fire.
Dark billows rose about 2 miles away, among the wheat and cornfields south of Blue Hill. Fielder, 52, knew it wasn't far from where one of her co-workers was finishing up a different bus route, but she didn't think much of it.
