About 30 people showed up earlier this week for a meeting to organize a local bicycle club. One of the decisions made by the group was to establish a Facebook page (tentative name: Scotts Bluff Bicycle Club). Within a couple of days about 100 people had signed up, indicating strong initial interest. The aim is to organize events and encourage bicycling in the area.

I don’t ride my bike very often, but I sat in as a member of the Scotts Bluff County tourism advisory committee. Organization of the club interests me because appealing to visiting bicyclists is a way to add economic value to the area’s scenic attractions, as the Monument Marathon has done, and because it encourages another healthy lifestyle.
