Tornado damages Bayard nursing facility, homes

On Monday, June 12, two tornadoes ripped through Morrill County, wreaking havoc. One tornado, classified as EF-1, struck Bayard, damaging the Chimney Rock Villa nursing facility and homes and properties on the east side of the community. A second tornado, classified as an EF-2, traveled along Highway 26 and L62A, an intersection four miles north/northwest of Bayard. That tornado caused significant damage to farmhouses and was even attributed to derailing a train north of Angora.

Tornadoes also struck in Goshen County and Sioux County, extending the damage.

In August, Morrill County was one of 18 Nebraska counties given a major disaster declaration by President Donald Trump.  Chimney Rock Public Power District officials estimated that one third of the 900 to 1,000 square miles that it covers were damaged; 225 to 250 poles, along with conductors and associated hardware.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Gov. J.B. Pritzker is seeking a federal agriculture disaster declaration for all of Illinois following the state’s soggy planting season.

Pritzker says in his request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture that winter snow melt and record rain caused rivers to swell to historic levels and soils to become saturated statewide this spring, forcing farmers to delay or scale back their planting, or not plant at all.
