Platte Valley Companies continues to tune up for postseason

Platte Valley Companies' Riley Gaudreault hits during a senior legion baseball game against the Buckley Bombers on Tuesday at Oregon Trail Park in Gering.

The Gering Platte Valley Companies and Buckley Bombers hooked up in two action-packed games Tuesday night at Oregon Trail Park.

The first game saw Riley Gaudreault score Jack Franklin in the 12th inning as the PVC seniors edged Buckley 3-2 in a 2 1/2 hour contest.

The second game saw the two squads combine for 20 runs and Gering had the tying runs on base before Buckley registered the 11-9 win.

The two squads split the series with each team registering three wins with one tie.

The opening game was a donnybrook between some excellent pitching. Jerod Balthazor picked up the win in relief of starter Justin Scott. Scott went seven innings in allowing just two runs while striking out five. Balthazor was sensational in the five extra innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two for the win.

Buckley grabbed a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and sixth innings. Gering came back with two in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score. Balthazor started the frame with a double followed by Quinton Janecek reaching on an error.

Riley Gaudreault scored the first run as Janecek crossed the plate with a fielder’s choice hit. Gaudreault tied the game on a Scott single.

Neither team scored again until the 12th when Franklin singled with two outs. Gaudreault then took a 2-2 count and hit a ground ball that was booted, causing Franklin to score with the walk-off winning run.

Buckley outhit Gering 9-8. Gering was led by Franklin and Scott with two hits each. Balthazor and Quinton Janecek each had doubles in the win.

The second game saw Buckley go up 7-1 after three innings and led 10-3 at one time.

PVC made a late inning rally, scoring eight runs in the final three innings. Gering scored two runs each in the fifth and sixth before plating four in the seventh.

The seventh was interesting as the teams had to wait 15 minutes before the lights would come back on after going dark at 10 p.m. When play resumed with Anthony Walker on second base after reaching on an error, Adreick Conn walked and then Balthazor scored a run with a single. Janecek followed with a single to score another run to make it 11-7.

Balthazor would later score on an error and then Janecek came in to score on another error to slice the lead to 11-9.

Both teams had nine hits and four errors in the contest. A trio of PVC players had two hits. Janecek had two hits with a run scored and a RBI. Gaudreault had a double with three RBI and a run scored, while Anthony Walker had two doubles with three RBI and a run scored.

Riley Schanaman had three RBI in the contest, while Ryley Hoke scored two runs.

Gering will be back in action on Monday at McCook.
