SIDNEY — The Sidney girls and Gering boys basketball teams registered wins on Friday night at Sidney High School.
In the girls’ contest, the Red Raiders stayed on fire by securing a 61-51 victory. The win was the 11th in a row for Class B’s eighth-ranked team by the Omaha World-Herald. Sidney now sports a 17-2 record.
While the final margin of victory was in double figures, the game proved tight throughout. Sidney moved out to an 18-11 lead after the first quarter before Gering outscored the Raiders 19-14 in the second period to pull within 32-30 at halftime.
Gering continued charging in the third quarter. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game following back-to-back 3-pointers by Macey Boggs and Paige Lopez. Lopez’s trey gave Gering a 40-38 advantage.
Sidney managed to go back in front by two at the end of the frame and rode that momentum into the final eight minutes. The Raiders opened the fourth period on an 8-0 run to build a 52-42 lead. The run was highlighted by a 3-pointer by Janay Brauer.
Sidney maintained its advantage the rest of the way thanks to strong defensive play and solid free throw shooting. The Raiders hit 10 free throws in the frame and outscored the Bulldogs by a 17-9 margin.
Brauer paced Sidney offensively with 17 points. Meaghan Ross followed with 12 points and Katelyn Sylvester finished with 10. Mattie Johnson added nine points. Brauer and Ross both sank a pair of 3-pointers.
Gering’s Lopez led all scorers in the contest with 25 points. She hit four 3-pointers. Arianna Mitchell also finished in the double-figure scoring column for the Bulldogs with 10 points. Jenna Balthazor added seven points.
In the boys’ game, Gering used a big second half to rally for a 69-60 victory. Sidney moved out to a 22-15 lead after one quarter and led 36-35 at halftime. The Bulldogs took over after intermission by outscoring the Raiders 34-24.
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures. Xavier Horst, Brett Pszanka and Riley Schilz led the way with 13 points each. Kolton Ebbers finished with 10. Bryce Sherrell and Henry Alvarez both added six points.
The win improved Gering to 7-8 on the season.
A pair of Raiders scored in double figures. JR Lucero finished with a team-high 15 points. He drained five 3-pointers. Arik Doty followed with 13 points. Also for Sidney, Skylar Heineman and Alex Jallen finished with nine points each.
Both schools will be in action at home on Saturday.
Sidney will host Scottsbluff beginning with the girls’ game at 3:30 p.m.
Gering will host Wheatland, Wyoming, with a start time of 5:30 p.m.
