In addition to tree-stands we can also enjoy observing nature through the lenses of live webcams from the comforts of our own home. One of my favorite sites is the camera at Brooks Falls - Katmai National Park, Alaska, USA. (https://explore.org/livecams/brown-bears/brown-bear-salmon-cam-brooks-falls)

There’s this one busy mama brown bear with triplets. And you’d better beware of protective mama bears. One of the hilarious happenings featured her frustration with her cute cubby 3-some during one of their relentless pursuits for Mama’s attention. Her massive front paw was frequently used to whap a cub to a back-somersaulting at her submissive-causing stroke of authority. One year I watched a mama black bear 30 ft up in a large pine tree up the Poudre in Colorado. She was lounging on her back, arms draped over a couple big branches. Her twin pests constantly intruded into her relaxed moments until she, too, took a big-pawed swat at one of the pups nearly hurtling it to a very fateful landing…it was close! There’s just something about a mama bear heart-set. Don’t mess with mama. When a school principal, it was my joy to work with several mama bears…back when paddles were legal, respectful behavior the norm and expectations and training directed to the character development of the school’s young men and young ladies. It was a happy and productive time and learning environment. I appreciate mama bears, particularly the one who raised me and the one who teamed with me to raise our own four. I nicknamed her Precious for well-deserved reasons. I enjoyed fielding quotes from moms over the years. Here are a few…”Call me when you get there”. “Wait ‘til your dad gets home”. “Knowing you’re loved might be just as important as love itself”. “Where’s my wooden spoon?”. “Just because”. “Next Sunday I’ll be out in the car honking”.

Mother’s Day has been an emotional day for me over the years. In addition to celebrating the recollection of legacies of mom’s who mothered well, there has also been the painful eye-exchanges of those neglected ones. Fetal alcohol sorrows. Guilt, regret and agonizing grief over youthful decisions to abort their viable infant. Mothers who have died, mothers whose children or their children’s father have died. The God of all comfort meets every mother-heart with grace and a loving pull to His arms. My personal story includes a time when my own mother confessed to me that had abortion been legal, she would have aborted me. A young married woman having committed adultery with another man who sired me in infidelity from his own wife and children. A faithful pastor in her neighborhood shared the greatest news of all with her and she received JESUS CHRIST personally as her savior. And then she as a single mom for many years loved her boy sacrificially. She was one awesome mama bear! I owe my life to her, and her Savior. The Word of God says “ Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me.” (Psalm 131:2)And this “Let your father and your mother be glad, And let her who bore you rejoice.” (Proverbs 23:25) Have you thanked your mom? Have you thanked God FOR your mom?
