Alliance rallies past Chadron in B-7 tourney

OGALLALA — After falling in an early hole, the Alliance First National Spartans caught fire in the middle innings to rally for a 5-3 win over the Chadron First Nationals in a winners’ bracket game of the Class B, Area 7 Senior Legion Baseball Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Ogallala.

The victory advances Alliance into a matchup against Gering Platte Valley Companies on Sunday at 2 p.m. The winner of that contest will move into the championship on Tuesday.

Dan Dunbar’s three-run home run in the top of the first inning gave Chadron a 3-0 lead. Chadron managed to hold that advantage until JJ Garza’s two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth got Alliance on the scoreboard.

Alliance followed that up by plating three runs in the fifth to go in front for good. Ezra Ray’s single scored Peyton Pinedo to tie the game at 3-3. EJ Gomez’s single then scored Joel Baker with the go-ahead run before Caeson Clarke lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Devin Garcia with Alliance’s fifth run.

Chadron managed to mount a threat in the top of the seventh by putting two runners on base. However, Trevor Dubray took over for Collin Schrawyer on the mound for Alliance to close things out.

Schrawyer earned the pitching victory. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, walked none and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings of work.

Baker led Alliance’s eight-hit attack at the plate with a pair of knocks, including a double.

Dunbar’s three-run blast highlighted Chadron’s six-hit offensive attack. Chadron also received singles from Colton Olson, Trevor Berry, Sam Rischling, Zander Provance, and Luke Tiensvold.

Cole Madsen, Kristian Bartlett and Cobie Bila all saw action on the mound for Chadron. Bartlett had one strikeout.

Chadron will square off with Ogallala in an elimination game on Sunday at 5 p.m. Ogallala posted an 8-0 victory over Sidney on Saturday night.
