Peter Costelli has had a terrific June, as the Mission Viejo (California) quarterback has picked up several Power Five Conference scholarship offers, even if he won't sign with a school until the 2021 recruiting class.
Nebraska quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco beat every other team to the punch, though, offering Costelli first. Oregon, LSU, Colorado and others followed for the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder, but he'll take an unofficial visit to NU June 21, when coach Scott Frost and Co. holds their big summer barbecue.
"I am excited to see the football facilities, the campus and Lincoln," Costelli told The World-Herald.
Costelli got the offer from Nebraska on May 28, but he actually met Verduzco on June 8 at the Azuza Pacific University camp in the Los Angeles area.
"I really liked his energy and enthusiasm," Costelli said. "He was great."
Verduzco and Nebraska does not make cosmetic recruiting offers so Costelli —rated three stars by 247 — could jump in the boat, in theory, on his visit. NU's 2020 quarterback commit, Logan Smothers, essentially did so last summer.
Of the nine 2021 quarterbacks Verduzco has offered, according to the 247 Sports database, only one has committed to another school. One is five-star Jake Garcia — the son of former Husker quarterback Randy Garcia. Another — four-star Dematrius Davis — visited Nebraska during spring camp.
