Scouting Nebraska: The Huskers came out of the gate firing on all cylinders last weekend, defeating two ranked teams and posting a 5-1 record at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona. That success vaulted Nebraska into a tie for No. 22 in the USA Softball/ESPN poll with California. ... Senior pitcher Kaylan Jablonski got at least one hit in NU’s first six games, and that’s the longest hitting streak of her career. Jablonski, who is hitting .474, also is 3-0 with one save in the circle after the opening weekend. ... Olivia Ferrell became the first Husker freshman pitcher to start a season opener against a ranked opponent when she took the field Feb. 9 against then-No. 19 BYU. She also became the first Nebraska freshman to pitch and bat in a season opener. ... Shortstop Tristen Edwards won Big Ten player of the week honors for her 11-of-21 (.524) weekend at the plate. New to the position, Edwards was charged with five errors in the Kajikawa Classic games. ... Three other Huskers are hitting better than .300 — Taylor Otte (.381), Alyvia Simmons (.333) and Gina Metzler (.313).
Scouting Boston College: The 1-4 Eagles opened the season at the Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas, losing to Texas Tech, Houston and twice to host Texas A&M before defeating Texas State. ... Jessica Dreswick is Boston College’s top pitcher. She set a single-season school record with 22 wins in 2017 and was named first team All-ACC. ... Shortstop Chloe Sharabba leads the ACC in doubles and is third in hits and on-base percentage.
Scouting Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets are a ramblin’ wreck after opening the season with losses to Lipscomb and Florida A&M last weekend in Gulf Shores, Alabama, before dropping a 5-2 decision Wednesday night to cross-town rival Georgia State. ... Senior pitcher Emily Anderson has led Georgia Tech in ERA and win-loss percentage the past two seasons. In the season opener against Lipscomb, she pitched eight innings and had five strikeouts but took the loss. She is one of 62 pitchers who have yet to surrender an earned run.
