Three Husker wrestlers advance to quarterfinals in NCAA championships

PITTSBURGH โ€” Nebraska moved three wrestlers into the quarterfinals on the opening day of the NCAA championships.

Tyler Berger, a two-time All-American at 157 pounds, Isaiah White (165) and Mikey Labriola (174) all went 2-0 on the day. That helped put the Huskers in eighth place in the team race with 16 points. Penn State leads with 32.5, followed by Ohio State and Iowa. Iowa State is in 11th.

Berger won his matches by technical fall and pin, while White and Labriola won decisions.

Labriola, a freshman who is seeded 10th at 174, picked up Nebraska's best win of the day as he rallied past seventh-seeded Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma State 8-4. Labriola trailed 3-1 before a takedown and two-point near-fall at the end of the second period turned the match.

Four other Huskers โ€” CJ Red (141), Taylor Venz (184), Eric Schultz (197) and heavyweight David Jensen โ€” went 1-1 on the day.

Iowa had seven of its nine wrestlers reach the quarterfinals, while Iowa State's Jarrett Degen (149) and Samuel Colbray (184) went 2-0 Thursday.
