Chadron girls, Sidney boys win Western Conference track and field titles

ALLIANCE — The Chadron girls and Sidney boys track and field teams claimed the Western Conference championships on Saturday in Alliance.

Chadron won seven different events to pile up a winning tally of 146 in the girls division. Sidney followed in second with 108 and Scottsbluff finished third with 74.5.

Freshman Olivia Reed led the Cardinals as a double winner individually. She blazed to a win in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.17 seconds and crossed the finish line first in the 400 with a time of 1 minute, 2.52 seconds. Reed also ran a leg on Chadron’s winning 4x400 relay that finished first in 4:15.27. She was joined by Allie Ferguson, Leila Tewahade and Jacey Garrett.

Tewahade, also a freshman, ran to a top finish in the 800 with a time of 2:31.78. Another Cardinal freshman Tatum Bailey cleared 5 feet, 1 inch to win the high jump. Reed finished second.

Chadron also received a first-place finish from senior True Thorne, who won the discus with a mark of 118-2. She added a second in the shot put.

The Cardinals’ Garrett, Ferguson, Malia Burwell, and Savanna Sayaloune teammed up to win the 4x100 relay in a time of 52.87.

Gering’s Maria Avila was a double winner by sweeping the hurdles events. She won the 100 highs in a personal-best time of 16.60 and placed first in the 300 lows in 48.86.

Mitchell’s Regan Hodsden collected a pair of wins in the distance events. She won the 1,600 in a time of 5:50.69 and cruised to a first-place finish in the 3,200 in 12:50.47. Hodsden’s teammate Bethany Sterkel sprinted to a first-place finish in the 100 in a personal-best time of 13.00.

A pair of Sidney girls won individual events. Karly Sylvester claimed the shot put with a mark of 36-1 1/2 and MJ Johnstone finished first in the pole vault. Both Johnstone and Scottsbluff’s Beretta Coats cleared 10-6.

Scottsbluff freshman Mariyah Avila placed first in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet.

Gering’s Elli Winkler won the triple jump with a personal-best distance of 34 feet.

Sidney’s Kimberly Gutierrez, Morgan Jaggers, Lydia Peters, and Karalyn Stevens teammed up to finish first in the 4x800 relay with a time of 11:21.98.

The Sidney boys used their depth on the track to win the team title with a score of 172. Scottsbluff was right behind in second with 107 and Gering finished third with 82.

All four of the Red Raiders’ top finishes were recorded in the running events. Cade Lewis won the 100 in 11.12, Alec Maddox claimed the 400 in personal-best time of 53.47, Benjamin Bashtovoi ran to a first-place finish in the 800 in 2:13.26, and Collin Brauer crossed the finish line first in the 3,200 in a time of 10:30.43.

Scottsbluff’s strength in the field powered the Bearcats to their second-place finish in the team race. The Bearcats won five of the six field events contested.

Senior Turner Scow led the way by sweeping the throwing events. He won the shot put with a personal-best mark of 47-11 1/2 and tossed the discus a distance of 166-7 1/2 to finish on top.

The Bearcats’ other field-event winners were James Bruner in the high jump clearing a personal-best height of 6-3, Perris Magdaleno in the pole vault at 13-0 and Cameron Geary in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 42-1 1/2.

Scottsbluff’s only top finish on the track was recorded by Luke Rohrer in the 110 high hurdles. He placed first with a time of 15.42. Geary followed right behind in second in 15.96.

A pair of Gering boys won individual events. Logan Moravec cruised to a first-place finish in the 1,600 with a personal-best time of 4:36.23 and Quinton Janecek won the 300 intermediate hurdles with a season-best time of 41.48.

The Bulldogs also won two of the three relays. Garrett W. Conn, Cody Ferguson, Riley Schanaman, and Kolton Ebbers won the 4x100 in 43.93, while Moravec, Brett Pszanka, Logan Andrews, and Peyton Seiler placed first in the 4x800 in 8:38.85.

Mitchell’s Kadin Perez sprinted to a first-place finish in the 200 in a time of 23.04. He also finished second in the 100 behind Sidney’s Lewis in 11.17.

Alliance’s Mason Hiemstra finished first in the long jump with a season-best mark of 20-9 1/2. Hiemstra also ran a leg on the Bulldogs’ winning 4x400 relay along with Eric Pollack, McClain Adamson and Devin Hughes. The foursome won with a time of 3:29.52.
