Bentley, Wilson capture Don Childs Memorial Run titles

A pair of familiar names crossed the finish line in first place during this year’s Don Childs Memorial Run held Friday morning in Gering.

Joe Wilson of Lingle, Wyoming, won the overall and men’s division for the second time, while Scottsbluff High School graduate Kaylee Bentley won the women’s division.

Wilson finished first in a blistering time of 28 minutes, 32 seconds, which was nearly a minute faster than Alliance’s Nicholas Kizzire, who finished second in 29:16. Kizzire is a four-time Don Childs winner.

Bentley, who is a University of Wyoming cross country and track and field runner, captured her first title by finishing first in a time of 33:54. That time put her seventh among the overall finishers. Bentley finished two minutes ahead of AnnMarie Wilson, who ran a 35:21 to place second.

Bentley said it felt great to be back running with people she competed with and against in high school.

“I just happen to be back home for the summer. It is fun to come back to these races and do better than when I was in high school,” she said. “It is really nice to come back and see people that I ran with in high school and the coaches.”

Bentley last ran the Don Childs 5-mile event in 2016 and finished first in the 16-under division and 16th overall.

Bentley stepped up her performance on Friday and was satisfied with her time.

“I am pretty happy with it,” she said. “It was a good effort for how my legs feel right now. They aren’t going to be the freshest because we haven’t done a lot of speed yet this summer. We have been building up in mileage, so I am really happy with it.”

Bentley said the course is a difficult one to run.

“This course is always tough because it goes uphill and it is super hot and not a lot of shade,” she said. “This is the highest mileage week I have ever done, so it was nice to break up training even though it wasn’t the best I could have done on fresh legs.”

Sarah Bell, who won the 40-49 division, was the third female finisher. Scottsbluff’s Brooke Holzworth was the fourth highest female runner, finishing 22nd overall in 39:32. Holzworth won the 16-under division, edging out Sioux County’s Kailey Klein, who finished 31st.

Joe Wilson and Kizzire were the only runners to break the 30-minute mark.

It was Wilson’s second win in his three times competing in the annual event. Wilson ran his first Don Childs in 1991 and then came back 10 years later in 2001 and won the event. After taking some time off from competing in the race, Wilson made it two straight with the overall win.

The win was special for Wilson, who ran it with his wife and son.

“It is a great feeling to come down with my wife and one of my kids. We kind of made it a family deal today to come out and run,” he said. “It is a great opportunity and always feels great to get out and run no matter what the results.”

While Wilson won the overall title, he was prouder of his wife, AnnMarie, and son, Sully. Sully, just 11 years old, finished 29th overall with a time of 42:02.

“Three times I ran it and I stretched it out over three decades,” Joe Wilson said. ”But it was my son’s first time running it today and he did great. We are not sure where he placed, but it was his first time getting out and just happy to be here. My wife was also the second overall female. She ran a great time. It was a great time for us to come down and be part of it.”

Wilson and his family made the trip to Gering to partake in Oregon Trail Days from their home outside of Lingle. He said it is a great event.

“It is a great experience and atmosphere to get out and run,” he said. “It is great to bring the family where we all can hurt the same hurt and then feel the same relief and joy of crossing the finish line. It is something we like to do as a family and be active. I like to do it to set an example for my family and kids.”

After Wilson and Kizzire, the next four male finishers were all within two minutes of each other. Brett Schoenhofer finished third overall in 31:49. David Castle finished fourth in 32:50.

Wilson also won the 40-49 age division. Kizzire, Schoenhofer, and Castle swept the top three in the 17-29 age division.

Nate Sindt won the male 30-39 division in 34:47 over John Marshall (36:46) and Thad Jarus (38:22). Robert Ensrud won the 50-59 division in 35:20 over JR Savala (37:13) and David Nagel (42:21), while Philip Schmitt won the 60-over division in 42:16, outlasting Robert Gonzales (42:49) and Tom Robinson (54:26).

The fifth fastest runner was 13-year-ole Hans Bastron, who ran the course in 33:06.

Other age division winners in the female division saw Sarah Bell win the 40-49 division with a time of 38:12 over Jennifer Heimbouch (39:54) and Sara Reichert (49:01). The 50-59 division was won by Stacy Totherow (43:34) over Leanne Weatherfield (48:04) and Lori Ware (49:37).

Kathy Rose won the 60-over division in 48:34 over Pam Vargasan (68:35) and Marlane Houston (69:55).
