Bridgeport, Bayard teams state-bound in Class D

BRIDGEPORT — The Panhandle will be well represented at next week’s Class D state cross country meet in Kearney.

Both the Bridgeport boys and girls qualified as teams out of the Class D, District 6 Meet held Thursday at Bridgeport’s Court House & Jail Rock Golf Course. The Bayard girls are also state-bound as a team. The Tigers finished second behind Chase County. Bridgeport followed in third.

Bridgeport’s Karissa Benavides led the local individual medalists by running to a second-place finish in a time of 20 minutes, 39 seconds. She only finished behind Dundy County-Stratton’s Sable Lambley, who won the individual title with a time of 19:51.

Bayard’s Jessica Whitebear finished right behind Benavides in third with a time of 20:48.

Also medaling for the Bridgeport girls was Sarah Lang, who placed seventh in 21:29.

Joining Benavides and Lang on Bridgeport’s state-qualifying team are Jacie Lussetto, Maggie Clinger, Jenna Eichthaler, and Jayden Kelly-Vergil.

Qualifying with Whitebear on the Tigers’ state-bound team are Laisha Garza, Laura Albro, Grace Burry, Leah Albro, and Christina Mascher.

Four other Panhandle girls qualified for state individually. Crawford’s Jillian Brennan placed ninth in 21:44, Kimball’s Chantel Malson finished 10th in 21:45, Crawford’s Kailey Klein placed 13th in 21:57, and Morrill’s Paityn Homan finished 14th in 22:02.

The Bridgeport boys are headed back to state as a team after finishing third. Perkins County won the team title and Chase County was second.

A pair of Bridgeport runners medaled individually in the top 15. Adam Bustinza finished seventh in a time of 18:19 and Casey Benavides followed in eighth in 18:27. Also headed to state for the Bulldogs are Luis Garza, Jace Phillips, Diego Sandoval, and Alex Barnette.

Three other local boys qualified for state individually. Banner County’s Deven Sullivan placed fourth in 17:54, Kimball’s Zachery Wagner finished sixth in 18:08 and Kimball’s Thomas Lenzen was 11th in 18:31.

Perkins County’s Caden Waitley won the boys’ individual title in a time of 17:12.
