Gering PVC shuts out Bridgeport

BRIIDGEPORT – Quinton Janecek was a home run away from hitting for the cycle as the Gering Platte Valley Companies senior legion baseball team pounded out 11 hits and 14 runs in the 14-0 win over the Bridgeport Bombers Wednesday evening in Bridgeport.

The contest was close after the first inning before Gering struck for a single run in the first and then put the game away in the third when PVC score nine runs on five hits. The big hits were run-scoring doubles from Janecek and Jack Franklin.

Gering added three more in the fourth with Riley Schanaman leading off with a double followed by run-scoring singles from Justin Scott and Riley Hoke for a 12-0 lead. Gering added one more to lead 13-0.

Bridgeport had a prime scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth when Jake Wallesen and Josh Kruse hit singles, Later, Brandon Nieger singled to load the bases, but Bridgeport couldn’t get any runs across.

Gering added one in the fifth as Janecek led off with a triple and scored on a Brady Radzymski grounder.

Janecek led the Gering bats with three hits with a single, double, and triple. He also scored two runs and had a RBI.

Justin Scott and Jack Franklin also had two hits. Franklin had a double with two RBI and a run scored while Scott and Riley Schanaman each scored two runs. Schanaman also had a double.

Bridgeport finished with six hits. Josh Kruse had two hits with a double, while Brandon Nieger had two hits.

Jerod Balthazor went five innings to get the win, scattering six hits while striking out three. Balthazor faced 21 batters.

Gering, 7-3-1, will be back in action Saturday when they travel for a doubleheader in Casper, Wyoming.

Bridgeport juniors hang on to beat B&C Steel

BRIDGEPORT – The Bridgeport junior legion baseball team scored early and then held off a Gering B&C Steel seventh-inning rally to win 9-8 on Wednesday in Bridgeport.

Bridgeport scored in the first three innings and trailed once as Gering scored three times in the third to hold a 4-3 lead. The junior Bombers scored two in the bottom of the third for a 5-4 lead.

Bridgeport then scored four times in the fifth inning on three singles and three straight walks.

Gering, facing the 9-4 deficit made a strong rally in the seventh, scoring four times on three hits. Keigin Shapland and Blake Green led off with back-to-back singles. After two outs, Tristin Strauch reached on an error to score one. Karsen Ryan then doubled in two followed by Camelo Timblin scoring one on a ground ball error, but that was as close as Gering could get.

Gering outhit Bridgeport 10-8. Gering was led by Chris Snelling and Tristin Strauch with two hits each. Strauch had a double with three RBIs, while Snelling scored two runs. Blake Green led the offense with three hits and two runs scored.

Bridgeport was led by Jake Wallesen and Jakob Kruse with two hits each.

Gering will be at home this weekend when they host the B&C Steel tourney. Gering will face Ft. Morgan and Casper on Saturday and then Gordon on Sunday.
