Kearney sweeps DH against Zephyrs

KEARNEY — The WESTCO Zephyrs senior legion baseball team was held to a combined eight hits in two games against Kearney Runza on Thursday, dropping the first game 8-1 and falling 9-1 in the night cap.

Kearney’s pitching staff held the Zephyrs to just one earned run in the double header, dropping WESTCO’s record back to 15-7.

WESTCO will continue its long stretch of road games Friday, with contests slated against Seward and Beatrice. First pitch for the Seward game is scheduled for 2 p.m., while the Beatrice game is set for 4:30 p.m.

In the first game, Kearney’s Jaxon Worley pitched a complete game, allowing just four hits over seven innings with three strikeouts. Runza jumped ahead in the early innings with a pair of runs in the second frame and two more in the third.

WESTCO’s lone run came in the fifth inning. K.J. Hartline reached on an error that allowed Jerrett Richter to score.

Kearney slammed the door on the Zephyrs with a 4-run sixth inning.

Paul Panduro finished 2-for-4 as the Zephyrs’ lead-off man. Harold Baez and Richter also added a hit each.

Kearney didn’t let the intermission slow them down in the second game, striking first with a run in the bottom of the opening inning, and tacking on four more in the second.

The Zephyrs tried to climb back in the game in the top of the third, loading the bases after Porter Robbins was hit by a pitch, Panduro singled and Creighton Dike drew a walk. Robbins scored with two outs on a wild pitch, but Kearney pitcher Will Richter and the Runza defense minimized the damage and held the Zephyrs to one run.

Kearney later added four more runs in the fifth inning to shorten the game due to the run rule.

Panduro added his second multi-hit game of the day, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Jerald Yberra and Jack Jones also contributed one hit each.
