Local golfers eliminated from state match play

AXTELL — A pair of Panhandle golfers were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the 57th Nebraska Girls Match Play Championship on Tuesday at Awarii Dunes Golf Club in Axtell.

Gering’s Madi Schlaepfer and Bayard’s Avery Mitchell both won their Round of 16 matches before falling in the quarterfinals.

Schlaepfer knocked off last year’s Nebraska amateur champion Kate Strickland of Lincoln in her opening match by a 3 and 1 score. She then battled strongly against top-seeded Danica Badura of Aurora in the quarterfinals before dropping a 3 and 1 decision.

Mitchell upset Lincoln’s Nicole Kolbas by a 2-up score in the first round. She then dropped a 3 and 2 setback to Omaha’s Jalea Culliver in the quarterfinals.

In today’s semifinals, Badura will face Lauren Thiele of Wahoo and Culliver will take on North Platte’s Baylee Steele. The championship match will follow the semifinals.
