BAYARD — Panhandle track and field athletes will take plenty of momentum into next week’s district competition after posting plenty of impressive finishes and personal-best performances during ideal weather conditions at the annual Bayard BCD Invitational on Friday at Bayard High School.

The Mitchell girls and Sidney boys took home team titles from the final meet of the regular season.

Thanks to picking up wins in nine different events, including eight on the track, the Tigers were able to edge Sidney by just two points in the girls division. Mitchell racked up a winning score of 136 and Sidney finished in second with 134.

Like has been the case all spring long, Mitchell piled up numerous points in the running events. Led by seniors Jori Peters and Olivia Armstrong, that again proved true on Friday. Both Peters and Armstrong were double individual-event winners, while both running a leg on two victorious relays.

Peters continued to dominate her pet events. She cruised to a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 59.66 seconds and also captured the 800 in a winning time of 2 minutes, 24.71 seconds.

Armstrong was just as impressive for the Tigers in the sprints. She blazed to a win in the 100 in a time of 13.24 and followed that up by winning the 200 in 27.19.

After competing at state as a relay member in the past, Armstrong’s aiming to book a trip back to Omaha in her individual events as well this year to close out her senior campaign.

“This year my big goal is to qualify for state in my sprints,” Armstrong said following her busy day in Bayard. “I’ve improved a lot since my freshman year and it’s been a great senior season for me. I feel like I’ve done a lot better than past years. I’m still hoping to lower my times to be able to place in all of my events next week at districts.”

Armstrong and Peters added to their medal haul Friday by powering Mitchell’s 4x100 and 4x400 relays across the finish line in first. The dynamic duo was joined by Natasha Perez and Bethany Sterkel on the 4x100 team that won in a time of 51.52. Victoria Schwartz then joined Armstrong, Perez and Peters on the victorious 4x400 relay with a time of 4:15.51. Those two Mitchell relay teams have won every race this season.

“It’s very encouraging to be part of a team like we have,” Armstrong said of this year’s Tiger squad. “We work very hard in practice to be able to achieve the goals that we have. It’s cool to see that happen.”

Schwartz added a top finish individually by winning the 1,600 in a personal-best time of 5:45.91.

Mitchell’s other win on the track came from Regan Hodsden in the 3,200. The sophomore placed first in a time of 12:09.32.

Jessica Cotant led the Tigers in the field by winning the shot put. She finished first with a personal-best mark of 35 feet, 10 1/2 inches.

Armstrong said Mitchell will take a lot of confidence and momentum into the postseason.

“Our goal is to win the district title and qualify a lot of kids for state,” she said. “We will be working to make that happen this week in practice.”

A number of other girls turned in winning performances on Friday. Bayard junior Kylie Stuart continued her successful spring on the track by winning the 100 high hurdles in a time of 17.03. Sidney senior Natalie Radcliffe also continued her winning ways by claiming the 300 low hurdles in a time of 49.07.

In addition to Radcliffe, two other Raiders won individual events. Karly Sylvester won the discus with a heave of 104-3 and MJ Johnstone cleared 9-10 to win the pole vault.

A pair of Kimball girls were individual-event winners. Hannah Biesecker captured the long jump with a mark of 16-1 1/2 and Samantha Bemis won the triple jump with a distance of 34-2 1/2.

Alliance’s Josie Otto claimed the title of the high jump with a height of 5-0. She edged her teammate Jordan Hopp, who finished second at 4-10.

Bridgeport’s Brittney Newkirk, Falen Jeffries, Dori Schneider, and Karissa Benavides teammed up to place first in the 4x800 relay in a time of 10:31.59.

The Sidney boys piled up 173 points and won six events to run away with their team title in Bayard. Bridgeport was the Raiders’ closest pursuer in second with 94. Mitchell followed in third with 78.

Cade Lewis led Sidney as a double individual-event winner. The junior sprinter won the 100 in 11.42 and claimed the 200 in 23.16.

Joining Lewis as individual-event winners for the Raiders were Christian Balandran in the 400 with a personal-best time of 52.02, Mitch Porter in the triple jump with a mark of 42-4 1/2 and Dylan Charles in the pole vault with a height of 11-10.

Sidney’s Ben Bashtovoi, Kaden Vowers, Colton Peckham, and Collin Brauer teammed up to win the 4x800 relay in a time of 8:52.05.

Bridgeport’s Marce Vasquez also was the winner of two individual events. The senior claimed the shot put with a mark of 46-9 and won the discus by tossing the platter a distance of 147-10.

Vasquez was joined as event winners by two of his Bulldog teammates. Declan Jeffries won the 800 in 2:02.43 and Jack Linders finished first in the 1,600 in 4:38.35.

Gilliland joined Rylan Aguallo, Jacob Flowers and Kadin Perez on Mitchell’s winning 4x100 relay. The Tigers clocked a time of 43.54.

Alliance’s Hiemstra, Kysen Harris, McClain Adamson, and Owen Shelmadine won the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:31.08.
