Panhandle golfers enjoy solid finish at weather-shortened state tournament

A weather-shortened Nebraska state tournament came to a quick conclusion for Panhandle golfers on Wednesday.

After Tuesday’s first round in all classes was washed out by rain, only 18 holes during the second day of the tournament were used to decide things.

Two local golfers returned home with top-15 individual medals. Alliance sophomore Crayten Cyza finished in a tie for 12th in Class B, which was contested at the Elks Country Club in Columbus. Cyza carded an 83.

Recent Bridgeport graduate Drake DeMasters earned a state medal in Class C by finishing in a tie for 13th at the Kearney Country Club. DeMasters shot a final round of 83.

Kimball was the lone Panhandle team to qualify for state. The Longhorns ended up placing seventh in Class C with a 368. Leading the way for Kimball individually was Dillon Wise, who tied for 30th with an 88. Also for the Longhorns, Izaac Reuter finished in a tie for 34th with an 89, Zane Anthony tied for 50th with a 95, Jesse Heide ended in a tie for 54th with a 96, and Cole Henton tied for 76th with a 103.

Kimball was making its fourth straight appearance at state as district champions.

Two other local golfers competed individually in Class C. Mitchell’s Burke Schneider tied for 39th with a 90 and Morrill’s Braeden Struempler finished in a tie for 60th with a 97.

Cambridge’s Preston Carbaugh won the individual title with a 74. Grand Island Central Catholic claimed the team title with a winning score of 324. Battle Creek captured the runner-up trophy with a 325.

Cyza was joined in the Class B state field by a pair of other Panhandle individual qualifiers. Sidney junior Cayden Jobman shot an 86 to finish in a tie for 27th. Chadron junior Trevor Berry placed in a tie for 53rd with a 92.

Elkhorn Mount Michael’s Luke Gutschewski won the individual title with a 71.

North Platte claimed the team championship with a 326. Adams Central finished right behind in second with a 328.

The state title was the Bulldogs’ first in more than 60 years. North Platte will move back up to Class A next year.

“It’s been awhile, so it’s a big deal in our town,” North Platte coach Jim Orcutt said. “This is very special. I knew it was going to be a pretty close race between a lot of different teams. We just knew we had to play well in order to come out on top, and they did it.”

The Bulldogs were the only team with two players who shot under 80. Junior Jayden Jones shot a 78 that included a 38 on the back nine to finish fifth, while sophomore Kasch Morrison checked in with a 79 for sixth place.

Junior Tanner Ruda also medaled with his 83, finishing in a four-way tie for 12th. Senior Andrew Phillips was North Platte’s No. 4 scorer with an 86 and junior Finn Lucas finished with a 91.

One Panhandle golfer competed at the Class D state tournament Wednesday in North Platte. Garden County’s Wyatt Santero finished in a tie for 34th with a 92.

Paxton’s Jeremy McMillan-Peters won the Class D individual title with a 75.

West Holt claimed the team title with a 355 and North Platte St. Patrick’s finished runner-up with a 356.
