The Western Nebraska Pioneers completed a three-game sweep of the Casper Horseheads after earning a 9-1 win in the series finale on Sunday at Oregon Trail Park Stadium in Gering.
Western Nebraska proved dominating in all three games, outscoring the Horseheads by a combined score of 38-5.
The Pioneers improved their overall record to 7-1, which leads the Expedition League.
Western Nebraska was supposed to open a three-game set with the Fremont Moo on Monday in Fremont, but the contest was cancelled because of poor weather. The teams are scheduled to face off on Tuesday at 5:35 p.m.
In Sunday’s game against Casper, the Pioneers again received more solid pitching. Bradley Morgan earned the win on the mound after giving up just three hits and striking out eight in four scoreless innings. Also seeing action on the hill in relief were Zach Carlsen, Landon Odom and Alex Jorgensen. Carlsen struck out two, while Odom and Jorgensen each fanned one.
Will Olson continued swinging a hot bat to lead Western Nebraska at the plate. He finished 3-for-4 with five runs batted in and three runs scored. Olson, who played last year for the Pioneers, homered and doubled in the contest.
Kole Kaler also finished with three hits, including a triple and a double. He scored three runs. Also finishing with a double for the Pioneers was Alonso Bibiano. He drove in a run and scored once.
Bibiano, Colin Ludwig and Jacen Roberson each finished with a stolen base.
After plating a run in the bottom of the first inning, the Pioneers never trailed. Leading 2-1, Western Nebraska ignited for three runs in the fifth to go up 5-1 before tacking on four more runs in the eighth.
The Pioneers will be on the road all week before returning home to host the Hastings Sodbusters on June 11 at Oregon Trail Park Stadium.
