Pioneers edged by Sabre Dogs

MINOT, N.D. — The Western Nebraska Pioneers couldn’t make two different leads stand up in a 4-3 setback to the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs in Expedition League baseball action on Friday night at Corbett Field in Minot, North Dakota.

Western Nebraska led 1-0 in the first inning and held a 2-1 advantage in the third. However, the Sabre Dogs scratched across one run in both the fourth and fifth innings to go in front for good.

The Pioneers out-hit the Sabre Dogs by a 7-6 margin. Zack Peterson and Colin Ludwig led the way with a pair of hits each. Peterson and Payton Lewis accounted for the team’s only extra-base hits in the game with doubles.

Ludwig and Alonso Bibiano drove in one run each. Peterson, Bibiano and Jacen Roberson each scored a run. Roberson recorded his team-leading 18th stolen base of the season. Ludwig also finished with a steal.

Josh Robins took the pitching loss on the mound for the Pioneers. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, walked three and struck out five in four innings of work.

Three Western Nebraska relievers combined to pitch four scoreless and hitless innings out of the bullpen. They were Bradley Morgan, Landon Odom and Bryce Mackey. Odom fanned three in 2 2/3 innings. Morgan and Mackey both struck out one.

The teams, who both lead their respective divisions, will continue their four-game series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.
