Pioneers grab second weather-shortened game this week

SPEARFISH, S.D. — In the second weather-shortened game of the week, the Western Nebraska Pioneers earned a 3-2 win over the Spearfish Sasquatch, Wednesday in Spearfish, South Dakota.

The game was stopped in the eighth inning due to inclement weather. The Pioneers had extended the lead to 8-2 with a big top half of the inning before play was halted. Due to Expedition League rules, the game goes back to the last complete inning, ending the game after seven innings.

On Monday, the Pioneers’ home game with the Sasquatch was also concluded early due to rain.

The Pioneers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in their first of a three-game road stretch. Cole Gambill hit a two-out double in the top of the first and seven pitches later, Zack Peterson hit a single to drive in the game’s first run.

The Sasquatch answered with a run of their own in the bottom half, when Joe York hit a sacrifice fly to score Josue Rangel.

Western Nebraska took back the advantage in the third as the top of the batting order kept wreaking havoc on the Sasquatch pitching staff. The Pioneers had back-to-back singles from Cody Wagner and Kole Kaler to lead off the inning. Gambill then hit his second double of the game to score both.

Spearfish inched within a run in the fifth when Rangel hit a RBI-single that scored Jaxon Rosencranz, a Spearfish native.

But as the rainstorm neared Spearfish, Western Nebraska took control of the game before play was stopped, eventually for good.

Gambill paced the Pioneer offense with two hits, a pair of doubles, that drove in two runs. He also came around to score once. Peterson added the other RBI on one hit.

On the mound, Michael Gurka picked up the win in five innings of action, although he did struggle with his command at times. Gurka struck out four while allowing two earned runs and six walks. Joseph Solomon earned the save, pitching two innings, striking out three with one walk and no hits.

The Pioneers will complete a two-game road set with the Sasquatch on Independence Day, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m., before playing Casper Horseheads on the road on Friday.
