Pioneers register sweep of Horseheads

CASPER, Wyo. — A pair of quality starts on the mound helped power the Western Nebraska Pioneers to a doubleheader sweep of the Casper Horseheads in Expedition League baseball action on Friday night at Mike Lansing Field in Casper, Wyoming.

Ty Bothwell struck out nine and allowed just three hits in a 3-0 shutout in game one, while Josh Robins fanned 10 and gave up only three hits in a 7-1 win in game two.

The victories improved the Pioneers to 28-8 on the season overall, which is the best record in the league.

Bothwell, a freshman from Indiana University, continued his impressive campaign in the blanking of the Horseheads. He improved his season record to 6-1. Bothwell also lowered his earned run average to 0.71 and increased his team-high strikeout total to 61.

The Pioneers struck for a run in the top of the third inning and added two more in the fourth on a two-run homer off the bat of Jordan Rathbone to complete the scoring. Kole Kaler drove in Western Nebraska’s first run with a double.

Payton Lewis was the lone Pioneer with two hits. Alfonso Bibiano also finished with a double.

A three-run third inning put the Pioneers in front for good in game two. They went on to add a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh frames.

Colin Ludwig led the offensively attack at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer. Chance Medina added a run-scoring double.

Ludwig and Will Olson scored two runs each. Lewis drove in a pair of runs.

Robins allowed just one earned run in six innings of work. He walked only one to go with his 10 strikeouts. Landon Odom tossed a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout.
