Pioneers’ streak snapped in Spearfish

SPEARFISH, S.D. — A six-game winning streak for the Western Nebraska Pioneers came to an end, Wednesday night in Spearfish, South Dakota.

The Pioneers couldn’t hold on to an early 3-0 lead and would fall to the Spearfish Sasquatch 5-3, dropping their record to 7-2. Spearfish moved within one game of the Clark Division lead with the win, improving its record to 6-3.

Western Nebraska had the upper hand in the early innings, scoring the first run in the third inning and stacking on two more in the fourth.

Will Richardson led off the third for the Pioneers with a single and advanced to third on a Jacen Roberson double. Kole Kaler loaded the bases with a walk. After two outs, Roberson scored on a wild pitch to give the Pioneers the early lead.

In the fourth, Chance Medina came up with the big hit. He drove a double into the outfield, to score Colin Ludwig and rounded the bases for the little-league home run.

But in the bottom half, the Sasquatch came stomping back with three runs to tie the game. With two runners on, Joe Yorke singled into center, scoring Josue Rangel and Jake Gray, and advanced to third on a throwing error. He later scored on a Brent Richey double.

In the seventh, Spearfish took control of the game when Grady Wright advanced to third on two stolen bases and scored the go-ahead run when Jaxon Rosencranz hit a two-run single, also scoring Zane Hunt.

The Pioneers had a late opportunity to get back in the game in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. But Spearfish’s closing pitcher Dylan High struck out the final two batters to earn the save.

Roberson led the Pioneers at the plate with three hits, including a double, to drive in two runs. He was the only Pioneer to finish with a multi-hit night.

On the mound, Landon Odom was charged with the loss after pitching 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits. Starting pitcher Blake Svoboda dealt five innings, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Western Nebraska’s road series with Spearfish continues Thursday, with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m.
