Sidney wrestlers claim title in Ainsworth

AINSWORTH — It proved to be another successful weekend on the mat for the Sidney wrestling team.

After edging Valentine in a dual on Friday night, the Red Raiders captured the team championship of the Ainsworth Invitational on Saturday in Ainsworth.

Sidney piled up a winning score of 236.5. Valentine followed in second with 196. Gordon-Rushville posted a fifth-place finish with 76.

A whopping eight Raiders reached the finals of their respective weight classes. However, Trey Arellano was the lone champion as he earned a 5-2 decision over Valentine’s Morgan McGinley in the 138 title match. Arellano also bested McGinley by decision in Friday’s dual.

Recording second-place finishes for Sidney were Austin Munier at 106, Cameron Brauer at 113, Brody Raines at 145, KC Higer at 152, Tristan Ahrendt at 170, Nathan Hofrock at 195, and Hayden Hofrock at 220.

Three Raiders earned third-place finishes. They were Jacob Peckham at 120, Brady Robb at 160 and Lane Hughes at 285.

Adding fourth-place finishes for Sidney were Jordan Ruiz at 113, Paul Houser at 132 and Hunter Ahrendt at 182.

The Raiders qualified to compete in the Nebraska State Duals Tournament, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 2 in Kearney.

Gordon-Rushville’s Conner Halverson earned a second-place finish at 195 to lead the Mustangs. Tommy Bragg at 170 and Kaden Vincent at 182 recorded third-place finishes for Gordon-Rushville.
