Stoyanow shuts down Sasquatch, leads Pioneers to 9-0 win

SPEARFISH, S.D. — Behind a seven-inning shutout performance from starting pitcher Andrei Stoyanow, the Western Nebraska Pioneers picked up a 9-0 road win over Clark Division Rival Spearfish, Thursday night.

In his second start of the season, Stoyanow held the Sasquatch to just three hits over seven innings while striking out six. Stoyanow still has yet to allow an earned run this season in two starts. He picked up a win in his first start last week against the Fremont Moo.

With the win, the Pioneers get back to their winning ways with a division best 8-2 record. Spearfish earned a 5-3 win on Wednesday night to snap Western Nebraska’s six-game winning streak.

With Stoyanow keeping the Sasquatch offense at bay, the Pioneers’ offense had no trouble bringing runs across the plate.

After Kole Kaler earned a walk in the game’s first at bat and stole second on a wild pitch, Jacen Roberson drove him in on a single to give the Pioneers the early 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers made it 2-0 in the second when Zack Peterson hit an RBI single that scored Mason Townsend.

Western Nebraska blew the game open in the third, with a four-run inning. Colin Ludwig scored on a wild pitch before Peterson hit a 2-run double.

The Pioneers added extra insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings and the pitching staff shut the Sasquatch down.

Johnny Floral finished the game on the mound for the Pioneers, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts in the final two innings.

Peterson paced the Pioneer bats with three hits, three RBI and a run scored. Payton Lewis added two RBI and Chance Medina scored twice.

Western Nebraska continues its road stand Friday in Casper, for the first of a three-game series with the Horseheads. The Pioneers swept a home series with Casper last week in Gering.
