Zephyrs, Express top Nationals at Cleveland Field

WESTCO’s Abel Garcia chases down Chadron’s Dawson Dunbar during a junior legion baseball game, Wednesday at Cleveland Field. The Express earned a 6-5 win.

In a season that has been riddled with rain-outs, delays and postponements, the WESTCO Zephyrs senior Legion baseball team caught just enough of a break in the clouds to topple Chadron on Wednesday night at Cleveland Field in Scottsbluff.

The win improves WESTCO to 22-15 on the season.

Chadron struck early in the contest when Trevor Berry doubled in teammate Colton Olson to give the Nationals the 1-0 advantage. However, the lead was short-lived when WESTCO’s Creighton Dike tripled in the bottom of the frame to drive in Tate Carson and Harold Baez after Carson knocked in Paul Panduro earlier in the inning to put WESTCO up 3-1.

A pair of lightening delays hampered the game, but not the home team’s lumber as the Zephyrs pounded out two more runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth to take an 8-3 lead. Chadron tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh on a RBI-single from Dan Dunbar, but Jerrett Richter closed the door to pick up the save and secure WESTCO’s 22nd win of the season.

Hunter McCollum earned the win on the hill for the Zephyrs, giving up just one run on two hits with five strikeouts in three innings of work. KJ Hartline pitched a solid pair of innings giving up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts, while Richter also had a productive outing with one run on two hits and three strikeouts.

Cole Matson took the loss for Chadron after giving up six runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts in two innings worked. Curt Bruhn gave up two runs on seven hits in four innings of relief.

Dike paced the Zephyrs going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Baez, Jace Heimerman and Richter all went 2-for-3 in the box. Baez also scored three runs in the win. Jones, Hartline, Carson and Porter Robbins each tallied a hit in the game.

Chadron was led by Berry, who finished 3-for-4 with a double. Olson, Dunbar, Kristian Bartlett and Tate Ryan each added a hit.

The Zephyrs will take Independence Day off before heading into this weekend’s Scottsbluff Screenprinting Wood Bat tournament at Cleveland Field.
