CHAPPELL — The WESTCO Zephyrs senior legion baseball team opened an 11-game road swing with a doubleheader split against the Buckley Bombers on Saturday in Chappell.
WESTCO, now 13-5 on the season, won’t play at home again until June 20. The Zephyrs will travel as far as Omaha on their road trip over the next 12 days.
In Saturday’s opener, the Zephyrs pulled even at 4-4 with a run in the top of the seventh inning and then went in front for good by plating a run in the eighth to claim a 5-4 win.
WESTCO totaled 13 hits in the contest. Creighton Dike led the way by going 4-for-4. He doubled and scored a run. Tate Carson followed with three hits, while Harold Baez and KJ Hartline both had two. Baez doubled and drove in two runs. Hartline also had a double.
Jack Jones homered in the game for the Zephyrs.
Jerrett Richter earned the win on the mound in relief of Jace Heimerman. Heimerman struck out three in 5 1/3 innings. Richter allowed just two hits and struck out one in two scoreless innings of work. Baez got the final two outs in the eighth to record the save.
In a role reversal of the opening game, Buckley scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh and the winning run in the eighth to capture a 4-3 victory in game two.
The Zephyrs enjoyed another solid performance at the plate by finishing with 10 hits. Paul Panduro, Dike, Jones, and Heimerman all had a pair of hits each. Jones tripled, while Baez Dike and Panduro all had doubles.
Dike led the Zephyrs with three runs batted in. Panduro scored a pair of runs.
WESTCO scored single runs in the first, fifth and seventh innings.
Jerald Ybarra started on the mound for the Zephyrs and got a no decision. He allowed just one earned run on three hits and struck out six in 6 2/3 innings.
WESTCO will travel to Lexington for a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
