SPEARFISH, S.D. — After collecting an eighth straight victory, the WESTCO Zephyrs senior legion baseball team’s longest winning streak in two years came to an end during a doubleheader on Saturday in Spearfish, South Dakota.
The Zephyrs erupted for a season-high run total in an 18-0 win in game one, but Spearfish managed to salvage a split by plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for an 8-7 win in the second game.
WESTCO, now 9-3 on the season, will travel to Casper, Wyoming, on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Crush.
Saturday’s opener proved to be a one-sided affair after the Zephyrs struck for six runs in the top of the first. WESTCO tacked on two runs in the second before igniting for 10 more in the fifth to enact the run-rule ending.
WESTCO finished the contest with 18 hits. Three of those were home runs. Hitting dingers for the Zephyrs were Harold Baez, Creighton Dike and Jack Jones. Paul Panduro added a triple, while Baez and Hunter McCollum both had doubles.
Baez, KJ Hartline and Jerald Ybarra all collected three hits each. Baez drove in four and plated a pair of runs. McCollum drove in three runs with a pair of hits. Ybarra knocked in two runs and scored twice.
Hartline and Panduro led the Zephyrs with three runs scored each. Panduro, Dike and Tate Carson all finished with two hits. Carson knocked in two runs. Jones drove in three with his homer.
Carson earned the win on the mound. He allowed just four hits and struck out three in four innings. Jerrett Richter allowed one hit and struck out one in an inning of relief.
WESTCO was forced to play from behind in the second game after Spearfish scored three runs in the bottom of the first. The home team tacked on single runs in the third and fifth to build a 5-0 advantage.
The Zephyrs finally got on the scoreboard by plating three runs in the sixth. WESTCO followed that up with four more runs in the seventh to grab a 7-6 lead. However, Spearfish managed to scratch out the tying and winning runs in its last at bat to capture the victory.
Jace Heimerman led the WESTCO offense with three hits and four runs batted in. Panduro added a pair of hits and scored two runs. Baez and Jones each had a double for the Zephyrs. Heimerman and Hartline had a stolen base each.
McCollum, Ybarra, Heimerman, and Hartline all saw action on the mound in the contest. Ybarra fanned four in four innings of work, while Heimerman struck out three over 2 2/3 innings.
Following Sunday’s trip to Casper, the Zephyrs will be back at home on Wednesday when they host North Platte.
